Christmas Decoration’s ‘ How - To’
"It's gonna be a white Christmas"
With these white Hyacinths Christmas is going to be white anyway; snow or no snow! The fragrance of the flowers is usually very welcome in this time of the year when windows and doors are closed 24 hours a day. Artificial air-refreshers are not necessary when you put a bowl like this in the living room and/or kitchen.
Ingredients:
2 pots of Hyacinth 'White Pearl'
A shallow bowl
Christmas decoration such as balls and fir-cones
Sphagnum
Metal wire
A little potting soil
How to:
You can use any shallow bowl or plate as the base for this decoration. You will
need to use some extra potting soil to keep the hyacinths upright. The hyacinths
can be replanted from the plastic container into the bowl. Make two little
groups instead of one group; this is more trendy and surprising! It is better to
do this with sprouted hyacinths instead of with flowering plants! Use the soil
and Sphagnum to create a sturdy base. Add some fir-cones and decorative
Christmas items to fill the empty space. With some metal wire (3-4 mm) you can
make a frame to support the hyacinths when they are in full bloom. The wire also
reflects the candle light in a nice way.
"Mirror, mirror on the wall…. most beautiful Christmas Ball"
Another fragrant surprise for Christmas is the Paperwhite narcissi. These bulbs are available in pots, but also as dry bulbs in the garden centre. It is very easy to get these flowers in bloom for Christmas with home forcing. Paperwhites do not need any preparation, their only requirement in life is water. So you can grow them on shells and water, just in water or in potting soil. In this decoration potted Paperwhites are used. With the mirror in the background the living room will seem full of flowers.
Ingredients:
Bowl/pots with Paperwhite Narcissi (we used 7 bulbs here)
9 small glasses
Metal wire
Pearls
Little candles
How to:
To achieve this look designer must rinse off the potting soil from the bulbs,
which come planted in plastic containers from the grower. Paperwhite is very
often sold in bowls with about 7 bulbs. So, in that case, you only need to buy
one bowl. As vases you can use soda glasses or real small glass vases. Three of
them will be filled with candles that will reflect through the Paperwhite into
the mirror. After rinsing off all the soil of the bulb and roots, the individual
bulbs are placed into the small vases. Make sure the bulb does not sit in the
water. Only its roots should touch the water in the vase!
To make this decoration more festive the designer used a metal wire with pearls on it to thread through the flowers. The pearls to catch the candlelight and their light is reflected around the room.
